About the Festival

The Flahertiana Festival takes its name from American filmmaker Robert Flaherty, embracing the aesthetic principles he first demonstrated in his seminal work Nanook of the North.

The competition program features films where, in the festival’s defining words, «a person lives out a portion of their life on screen, structured by the director according to the laws of dramaturgy.»

First held in 1995 as a biennial theoretical symposium, Flahertiana transitioned in 2006 into an annual international documentary festival with competitive programs.
